Cypurs abolishes daily cash withdrawals

Good news for those who pay rents in cash to their landlords (and not only). As of today, Cyprus abolishes daily cash withdrawals from the ATM's. Before the restriction the limit amounted for 300 euro per day. Some people spent two-three days to withdraw all the money necessary to pay the rent. Life will be now a little easier :)

Dobra wiadomość dla tych, którzy swój czynsz płacą gotówką dla właścicieli mieszkań (i nie tylko). Od dziś, Cypr zniósł dziennym limit wypłat z bankomatów. Do tej pory ograniczenie wynosiło 300 euro dziennie. Niektórzy spędzali 2-3 dni, aby wypłacić pieniądze konieczne na opłatę czynszu. Życie teraz będzie trochę łatwiejsze :)

Cyprus Holidays

Today Cypriot people have day off. It's the Greek Independence Day. This is also a day off in Greece. 25th of March commemorates the start of the War of Greek independence in 1821. Today on the streets of Cyprus we can see lots of national flags of Greece and Cyprus.

Cypryjczycy mają dziś dzień wolny ze względu na Dzień Niepodległości w Grecji. To także dzień wolny w Grecji. 25 marca przypomina początek wojny o niepodległość Grecji w 1821 roku. Dziś na ulicach Cypru możemy zobaczyć wiele flag Grecji oraz Cypru.

Cyprus Carnival

Carnival in Cyprus occurs - as I think everywhere - just before Lent. It has been a popular and much celebrated event here on the island for many centuries. Main attraction in the last day parade. Thousands of people along the main streets are having fun listening to the loud music and watching the never ending parade of people disguised as anything you can even imagine. Lots of them have masks, unique costumes. Everyone can participate in the parade. 

The whole event is held only in Limassol, on the south of the island. I had a pleasure to see the parade. Below you will find some pictures. 

Karnawał na Cyprze - podobnie jak chyba wszędzie - pojawi się tuż przed postem. Na wyspie to popularne i bardzo celebrowane wydarzenie przez wiele wieków. Główną atrakcją jest parada ostatniego dnia. Tysiące ludzi wzdłuż głównych ulic dobrze się bawi słuchając głośnej muzyki i oglądając niekończącą się paradę ludzi przebranych za wszystko co tylko można sobie wyobrazić. Wiele z nich ma maski, unikatowe kostiumy. Każdy może uczestniczyć w paradzie.

Całe wydarzenie odbywa się tylko w Limassol, na południu wyspy. Miałem przyjemność przyglądania się tej paradzie. Poniżej kilka zdjęć. 

Earthquake shakes Cyprus

On 28th of December I experienced my first ever earthquake. I was sitting on sofa, reading a book and at some point I felt that my sofa is shaking to the left, to the right, up and down, the rest of furniture were shaking, too, and a chandelier was swinging. It didn't last long, let's say around 15 second. The epicenter of earthquake took place at Mediterranean Sea, between Turkey and Cyprus. It was 213 kilometres from Limassol. Earthquake reached a 5,9-Richter magnitude and it was the strongest earthquake felt in Cyprus since 1996.

No injuries reported after the earthquake. Some areas lost power and cracks in the building occured on the south of Turkey and on the north of Cyprus. 

Mother nature is unimaginably strong. 

28 grudnia przeżyłem swoje pierwsze trzęsienie ziemi. Siedziałem na kanapie czytając książkę i w pewnym momencie poczułem, że sofa zaczyna ruszać się w lewo, prawo, podskakiwać do góry i do dołu, pozostałe meble drżały, a żyrandol kołysał się. Nie trwało to długo, może około 15 sekund. Epicentrum trzęsienia miało miejsce na Morzu Śródziemnym, pomiędzy Turcją, a Cyprem. Było to 213 kilometrów od Limassol. Trzęsienie osiągnęło siłę 5,9 Richtera i było najsilniejszym trzęsieniem na Cyprze od 1996 roku.

Po trzęsieniu nie odnotowano żadnych kontuzji. W południowej Turcji i na północnym Cyprze niektóre rejony straciły prąd, a na niektórych budynkach pojawiły się pęknięcia. 

Matka natura jest niewyobrażalnie silna.

Deflation in Cyprus

As we can read in one of today's Cypriot newspaper "Cyprus Mail", the island country records deflation for the first time since 1964. 

Rate of deflation records -0,4%. It happend mainly due to decreases in the prices of electricity, potatoes and clothing items. In the previous year, electricity prices have gone down 17,5% which is very noticeable when you pay your bill. 

In my opinion - and not only mine - deflation is not a good sign for the economy and the recovery from the crisis will take a long time. 

Jak możemy przeczytać w jednej z dzisiejszych cypryjskich gazet "Cyprus Mail", kraj zanotował deflację po raz pierwszy od 1964 roku.

Poziom deflacji wyniósł -0,4%. Stało się to głównie dzięki spadkom cen prądu, ziemniaków i odzieży. W ubiegłym roku, ceny prądu obniżone zostały o 17,5%, co jest bardzo zauważalne kiedy przychodzi do płacenia rachunku.

W mojej opinii - i nie tylko mojej - deflacja nie jest dobrym znakiem dla gospodarki i wyjście z kryzysu zajmie sporo czasu. 

New Year's Eve

My first New Year's Eve in Cyprus went by. I'm not a fan of this holiday so as usuall I was watching NBA games. I have very close to the beach and this year's fireworks took place along the sea side on the beach. I've taken a few pictures from my balcony which you can see below.

Pierwszy sylwester na Cyprze jest już za mną. Nie jestem fanem tego święta, więc jak zwykle oglądałem mecze NBA. Mam bardzo blisko do plaży, a w tym roku fajerwerki miały miejsce na plaży wzdłuż morza. Zrobiłem kilka zdjęć z mojego balkonu, które możesz zobaczyć poniżej.

Deal to the unemployed

Christmas is just around the corner and the unemployed in Cyprus received a deal from the biggest Cypriot bank - Bank of Cyprus (Boc). So last Friday BoC decided that all unemployed who have to pay their regular instalments on housing loans, won't have to do it for the next 12 months. They just have to pay a token amount of 10 euro per month and if someone can't afford 10 euro, then will have to pay 5 euro per month. The arrangment can be extended to the maximum three years if the customer won't find a job during the next 12 months. The deal is extremely good, because even if the unemployed will find a job, for the next 12 months they have to pay only the interest rate on their loan. They capital won't be required. 

The unemployment rate is sky-rocketing. At the end of 2010 it was 9,7%. Last year it has risen to 13,7% and this year it has elevated to 17%.

Święta są tuż za rogiem, a bezrobotni na Cyprze otrzymali świetną ofertę od największego banku na Cyprze - Bank of Cyprus (BoC). Tak więc w ostatni piątek BoC zdecydował, że wszyscy bezrobotni, którzy muszą płacić raty kredytu hipotecznego, nie będę musieli go spłacać przez następne 12 miesięcy. Wymogiem będzie tylko symboliczna opłata w wysokości 10 euro miesięcznie, a jeśli ktoś nie będzie mógł sobie na to pozwolić to wystarczy 5 euro. Umowa może być wydłużona maksymalnie do trzech lat, jeśli klienci banku nie znajdą pracy w ciągu następnych 12 miesięcy. Oferta jest niezwykle korzystna, ponieważ nawet jeśli bezrobotny znajdzie już pracę, to przez kolejne 12 miesięcy będzie musiał spłacać tylko odsetki od kredytu. Część kapitałowa nie będzie wymagana.

Poziom bezrobocia rośnie bardzo szybko. Pod koniec 2010 roku wynosił 9,7%. Rok temu wzrósł do 13,7%, a w tym roku podniósł się do 17%.

300 euro restriction

Just a short post and quick curiosity. In Cyprus you are allowed to withdraw only 300 euro a day from your bank account. So if you need for example 600 euro you need two days or you need to have two bank accounts.

Krótki post i mała ciekawostka. Na Cyprze można wypłacić tylko 300 euro dziennie ze swojego konta bankowego. Tak więc jeśli potrzebujesz na przykład 600 euro, potrzebujesz dwóch dni albo musisz mieć dwa konta bankowe. 

Fruits & vegetables

Living in Poland get me used to the fact that the variety of fruits and vegetables is quite small and the prices are quite high. Apart from cheap potatoes, carrots, beetroots and straweberries in May & June, all the rest in my opinion was expensive. Fruits must be imported to Poland due to the cold climate. If you love fruits and vegetables Cyprus will be like a paradise. Not only the array is huge, but they are also EXTREMELY cheap. But there is no wonder, because on the streets banana, lemon, orange, grapefruit, mandarin and pomegrante trees are growing. Every Saturday I go to the market to buy a few bags of this healthy food. Those are the latest prices (in euro):

Życie w Polsce przyzwyczaiło mnie do faktu, że wybór owoców i warzywa jest dość mały, a ceny dość wysokie. Poza tanimi ziemniakami, marchewką, burakami i truskawkami w maju i czerwcu, cała reszta moim zdaniem była dość droga. Owoce muszą być importowane do Polski, ze względu na zimny klimat. Jeśli kochasz owoce i warzywa, Cypr będzie jak raj. Nie tylko wybór jest ogromny, ale także są one NIESAMOWICIE tanie. Nie ma się czemu dziwić, ponieważ na ulicach rosną drzewa bananowe, cytrynowe, pomarańczowe, grejpfrutowe, mandarynkowe i granatowe. Każdej soboty idę na rynek i kupuję kilka toreb tego zdrowego jedzenia. Oto aktualne ceny (w euro):

Mandarin (Mandarynki) 1kg - 0,50 E

Tomatoes (Pomidory) 1kg - 0,30 E

Bananas (Banany) 1kg - 0,60 E

Grapefruit (Grajpfrut) 1kg - 0,40 E

Carrot (Marchewka) 1kg - 1 E

String beans (Szparagówka) 1kg - 2 E

Apples (Jabłka) 1kg - 1 E

Lemons (Cytryny) 1kg  - 0,20 E  (I usually need one or two lemons so the salesman always give it for free / Zazwyczaj potrzebuję jedną albo dwie cytryny, więc sprzedawca daje mi je za darmo)

Strawberries 1kg (Truskawki) - 4 E

Of course there is much more fruits, but the above is just my today's shopping list :)

Oczywiście owoców jest dużo więcej, ale powyższe to tylko moja dzisiejsza lista zakupów :)

Two weeks ago I took the whole bunch of bananas which fell down from the tree on one of the streets. They were delicious ! :)

 Dwa tygodnie temu wziąłem całą kiść bananów, która spadła z drzewa na jednej z ulic. Były pyszne ! :)

Santa is coming to town !

Santa and Christmas are coming to Cyprus. All shops exhibitions are in the festive mood. Shopping arcades are decorated with Christmas trees, small shops are full of Santas, snowmans and Christmas balls. In the city center of Limassol the nativity play has been placed and on one of the roundabouts a large head of Santa.

Święty Mikołaj i Święta są coraz bliżej Cypru. Wszystkie wystawy sklepowe są już w świątecznym nastroju. Galerie handlowe udekorowane są chonikami, małe sklepy są pełne świętych mikołajów, bałwanów i bombek choinkowych. W centrum Limassol postawiona została szopka, a na jednym z rond, ogromna głowa Świętego Mikołaja.

Rent prices

Property prices and rent prices are falling significantly in Cyprus during the last few years. When I came to Cyprus I've heard that there is a new act of law which said that all apartments rent have to be lowered by 20% by their landlords. It was concerned with all agreements before September 2012. That sounded really good for tenants, but finally, the rent law was rejected. Parliament agreed that this law was unconstitutional and would distort the market. 

Flat prices from the beginning of 2010 has plummeted more than 30% in most of the main cities and apartment rent has plummeted, too. Government wanted to even out the 'old rent prices' with the 'new rent prices'. 

If you want to rent an apartment in Cyprus you have to sign at least one year agreement. So if someone rented an apartment with two or three years agreement, it means that he or she is in quite uneconomic situation, because now 1 bedroom you can rent for 500 euro, and two years ago it was like 600-650 euro.

In my opinion it's good that market rules in rental pricing.

Ceny mieszkań oraz koszt wynajmu mieszkań spada wyraźnie na Cyprze w przeciągu kilku ostatnich lat. Kiedy przyjechałem na Cypr usłyszałem, że jest nowa ustawa, która mówiła, iż właściciele mieszkań muszą obniżyć czynsz o 20%. Dotyczyło to wszystkich umów podpisanych przed wrześniem 2012 r. Brzmiało to świetnie dla lokatorów, ale ostatecznie prawo zostało odrzucone. Parlament uznał, że to prawo byłoby niezgodne z konstytucją i zamieszałoby rynkiem. 

Ceny mieszkań od początku 2010 r. w większości głównych miast spadły o ponad 30%, czynsze za wynajem także spadły znacząco. Rząd chciał zrównać ceny 'starych czynszów' z 'nowymi czynszami'.

Jeśli chcesz wynająć apartament na Cyprze musisz podpisać minimum roczną umowę. Jeśli ktoś wynajął apartament z dwu lub trzy letnią umową, to oznacza, że jest w dość nieekonomicznej sytuacji, ponieważ 2 pokoje można obecnie wynająć za 500 euro, a jeszcze dwa lata temu cena była w okolicach 600-650 euro. 

Moim zdaniem to dobrze, że cenami rządzi rynek. 

Cats

If you are cats lover then Cyprus is definitely for you. I love cats and I always stop when I see a cat. There is always a chance to stroke him (or her). Every day I'm counting cats that I saw. In Warsaw very seldom it was more than 5 cats during the entire day. In Limassol where I've been living, I'm able to count up to 35 cats a day (this is my record by now). Today I went out for 40 minutes run and I've counted 15 cats.

Jeśli jesteś miłośnikiem kotów to Cypr jest zdecydowanie dla Ciebie. Kocham koty i zawsze zatrzymuję się kiedy widzę kota. Zawsze jest szansa, aby go pogłaskać. Każdego dnia liczę koty, który widziałem. W Warszawie bardzo rzadko mogłem zobaczyć więcej niż 5 kotów przez cały dzień. W Limassol, gdzie mieszkam, jestem w stanie doliczyć się do 35 kotów w ciagu dnia (to jest mój rekord dotychczasowy). Dzisiaj wyszedłem na 40 minutowy bieg i widziałem 15 kotów. 

I was in KFC restaurant a few days ago, I've met three cats and I help them with chicken. The other day I was in Pizza Hut where two cats were hidden under the table. Of course, we shared my margherita.

Byłem w KFC kilka dni temu, spotkałem trzy koty i poczęstowałem je kurczakiem. Innego dnia byłem w Pizza Hut i dwa koty schowane były pod stołem. Oczywiście, podzieliliśmy się margheritą.

Hi ! My name is Kamil.

I've been living in Cyprus since 24th of October 2013. I've moved from Warsaw in Poland. I'm not sure how long I will be living here, but probably, it will be a few years. That's why I hit upon the idea to establish a blog about living in Cyprus, Cypriot culture, habits, curiosities. I hope you will like it.

Mieszkam na Cyprze od 24 października 2013 r. Przeprowadziłem się z Warszawy w Polsce. Nie jestem pewny jak długo będę tu mieszkać, ale prawdopodobnie będzie to kilka lat. Dlatego też wpadłem na pomysł stworzenia bloga, gdzie pisać będę o życiu na Cyprze, cypryjskiej kulturze, zwyczajach, ciekawostkach. Mam nadzieję, że się wam spodoba.
